Let Me Set the Scene
I already had two coffee machines on my kitchen counter when this arrived. Two. My husband had started making comments about the machine-to-person ratio in our house. So when I tell you that even he agreed the L'OR Barista Absolu deserved its spot on the counter — you know it must be something special.
I've been using this machine most days for a good while now, and I'm ready to give you my honest take. No fluff, no spec sheet reciting — just what it's actually like to live with it.
First Impressions — Out of the Box
The Absolu was a gift, and when I unboxed it I was immediately struck by how compact it is. I genuinely wasn't expecting it to be this small. It sits neatly beside my fridge, looks elegant without screaming for attention, and takes up surprisingly little counter space for what it delivers. If you're worried about adding another machine to an already busy kitchen, this one won't cause an argument. Even my husband had to admit it.
Setup was effortless — genuinely up and running within minutes. No confusing instructions, no fiddling. Pop it on the counter, fill the tank, run a rinse cycle and you're away. For a machine that looks this sleek, I expected more of a learning curve. There wasn't one.
Design & Build
The Absolu is a good-looking machine. There's no other way to say it. The clean lines, the minimal button layout, the way it just sits there looking intentional — it genuinely elevates the look of my kitchen rather than cluttering it.
The movable water tank is one of those details you don't know you needed until you have it. My counter space isn't the most generous, and being able to reposition the tank to suit where the machine sits has been genuinely useful rather than just a marketing feature.
The pod holder looks deceptively small when you first see it, but don't be put off — it holds a surprisingly good amount of used pods before it needs emptying.
Heads up: If your lever ever feels stuck, don't panic and don't force it. Nine times out of ten your pod bin is simply full. Empty it and the lever releases perfectly. I had a minor moment of concern the first time this happened before I figured it out — so consider this your warning!
Making Coffee — The Daily Experience
I use this machine most days, primarily for lungos, double shots, and americanos — so I've put it through its paces on the drinks that really test a machine's extraction quality.
The heat-up time is outstanding. Under 30 seconds from cold to coffee in your cup. On a busy morning — and with a toddler in the house, they are all busy mornings — this matters more than any other feature. I don't want to stand waiting. This machine doesn't make me wait.
The coffee quality is excellent. Rich, full-bodied, proper crema on top. The kind of cup that makes you close your eyes for a second before getting on with the chaos of the day. For a pod machine at this price point, the flavour genuinely impressed me.
The brewing noise is noticeable — this isn't a silent machine — but it's completely acceptable. It's a coffee machine, not a library. It does its thing, makes a bit of noise for under a minute, and then it's done.
Pod Compatibility — The Bit That Really Matters
This is where the Absolu really wins. It works with L'OR Espresso single shot capsules, the exclusive L'OR Barista XXL double shot capsules, and — crucially — the entire range of Nespresso Original capsules and most third-party compatible pods. That's an enormous selection of coffee at various price points, from supermarket own-brand pods to premium specialty options.
The dual capsule recognition is seamless. Drop a pod in, close the lever, press your button — the machine reads the capsule size automatically and adjusts accordingly. You don't have to think about it.
The one limitation worth mentioning honestly is the XXL double shot capsules. Right now these are only available from L'OR themselves, which means your options for that format are limited to their range. I'm keeping an eye out for alternatives as the format grows. That said — the standard capsule double shot option more than compensates. I simply use two standard capsules back to back for a generous lungo-style double shot, and the result is far from watery. It's a completely satisfying workaround while the XXL market catches up.
The Iced Coffee Mode
The Absolu has a dedicated iced coffee mode that brews at a lower temperature, designed to go straight over ice without the bitterness you'd normally get from hot coffee poured cold. It works — the result is smooth, properly chilled, and noticeably better than just pouring a regular shot over ice.
Is it life changing? Honestly, not quite. If iced coffee is your primary reason for buying this machine, I'd temper expectations slightly — it's a nice feature rather than a revelation. But as a bonus on top of everything else this machine does well, it's a genuinely useful addition, particularly in summer, and it puts the Absolu ahead of every other machine in its category that simply doesn't offer it at all.

The combination of compact design, excellent coffee, and wide pod compatibility makes this one of the most versatile machines at its price point.
Final Verdict
The Philips L'OR Barista Absolu is a genuinely excellent pod coffee machine. It's fast, it's beautiful, it makes outstanding coffee, and it takes up less space than you'd expect. The Nespresso compatibility opens up an enormous world of pod choice, and the movable water tank is the kind of thoughtful design detail that makes daily use genuinely pleasant.
The XXL capsule variety is limited right now — but that's a minor complaint about an otherwise impressive machine. I received this as a gift and I use it most days. If that's not a recommendation, I don't know what is.
Would I recommend it? Without hesitation.
